About Little Caillou Fire Department
and Terrebonne Parish Fire District #7

Our Volunteer Organization

"The Little Caillou Volunteer Fire Department No. 1 was started by a small group of citizens of Chauvin.  These civic-minded people, led by Usy Pellegrin met one night in October 1951.  They discussed the benefits which would be desired by the people of Little Caillou and surrounding sections and elected a committee to act as a board of directors for the company." Reported by L.J. Chauvin, Jr.

The following is an account of the proceedings that took place at the first meeting of the fire department.  During the October 1951 meeting, the first board of directors was elected by secret ballot.  The following is a list of the men who were elected to serve on this board:

L.J. Chauvin

R.G. LeCompte

Allen Cuneo

Albert Lirette

Logan Babin

John Pitre

Duffy Duplantis

Elmore Chauvin

Virgil Falgout

Thaddeus Pellegrin

Emile Fryou

Usy Pellegrin

The board was led by the following officers: Usy Pellegrin, President; Thaddeus Pellegrin, Vice-President; L.J. Chauvin, Secretary; and Virgil Falgout, Treasury. The board discussed the ways they thought best to raise funds to finance the fire protection service.  They decided that they would make a house-to-house conversation and solicit donations and contributions to raise an adequate sum of money for the cause.  The donations and contributions were to be spread out over a period of two years.  Cash or checks were accepted the first year and the next year they would collect the pledges.  Upon this decision, the board moved and seconded that the meeting be adjourned.

On December 3, 1951, the board met to discuss the progress and announced it had collected the total sum of $2,637.00.  During this period the board had also formed a fire truck committee.  This committee collected three bids from Porche Motors, Quality Chevrolet, and Terrebonne Motors.  After discussion about the bids, a motion was made by Duffy Duplantis that the company buy the Ford F-7 which was seconded by R.G. LeCompte and was carried by a vote of 7 to 0.   Following this motion Thaddeus Pellegrin motioned to purchase the fire equipment later seconded by Albert Lirette.  With this Albert Lirette motioned then to have an investigation committee formed to visit the fire departments of Montegut and Thibodaux to give them an idea of what kind of equipment to buy.  The motion was seconded by Thaddeus Pellegrin.  And within these few months, a group of men had dedicated their time to begin the department that we have today.
